BEN STEPHENS GRABS FLOYD CLAUSEN MEMORIAL WIN

Friday night Ben took his LUCAS OIL/SCHOENFELD HEADERS/TAYLOR-SHAW modified to victory lane at the Floyd Clausen Memorial Modified race at Hattiesburg’s Southern Speedway.

Mr. Clausen and his family maintained a thriving racing parts business in south central Mississippi and many of the racing community were familiar with his kindness and knowledge. Ben still purchases many of his race parts from the Clausen family business.

Ben timed in second fast behind Mike Ladner who had come up from the coast. The top two were locked in for the feature and were given a special hot lap session since they didn’t have to run a heat race. After hot laps Ben and crew chief Jacob Burns changed three shocks, two springs, and a tire and move one of the 4-bars hoping to find the magic setup for the feature. The track was developing some ruts and holes which forced the wholesale changes.

Ben started on the outside front row and at the drop of the green flag Ben stayed door-to-door with Ladner. An early race bobble by Ladner gave Ben the opening he needed to take the lead and the he set sail. Ben’s long-time friend and former stable mate Kevin Cumbie eventually moved into second but had nothing for Ben who had opened a commanding lead.

The win paid $900 and was Ben’s fourth visit to victory lane in 2008. Next weekend Ben will compete in the “Topless 40” at South Mississippi Speedway just west of Gulfport, MS.

ATWOOD OUTLAW REPEATS AS MODIFIED FOUR CROWN CHAMPION

Atwood, Tennessee’s own T.J. Herndon campaigned his Jeff Taylor Motorsports Modified to a second consecutive Four Crown Modified Championship of Alabama and Mississippi this past Memorial Day weekend. Herndon competed against a total of forty seven drivers from throughout the Mid South as the series moved from North Alabama Speedway to Columbus (MS) Speedway then onto Magnolia (MS) Speedway before returning to Moulton (AL) Speedway for the final race which was eventually called due to thunderstorms. At the conclusion of the series, the Atwood Outlaw would repeat as the Four Crown Modified Champion by the narrow margin of just one point over fellow Shaw by Taylor driver, Shay Knight out of Columbus, MS.

T.J. HERNDON CONQUERS CLAYHILL!!!

As T.J. Herndon completed his final week of school before the summer break, he and the UpFront Performance team made their way to Camden Speedway on Friday night to compete in their weekly Modified program. As the team made tire changes between the hot lap session and the qualifying Heats, it was discovered that the frame rail that connects the front clip of the car to the rear suspension had a weld that was completely severed. After making the decision to go ahead and run the car, Herndon managed to push the #1 Shaw by Taylor to a second place finish in the Heat. He then started the Main event from the outside pole which he was able to capitalize on a mistake by the pole sitter on the first lap which would hand him the lead. Herndon then would hold the front spot for a couple or three of revolutions before he himself would also make a mistake relinquishing the lead as he fought to get a grip on his ill handling racecar. As the checkered flag fell across the field, the father/son team of Michael and Lucas Lee would take the top two spots as Herndon was barely able to pull off a third place over Matt Cooper after falling back as far as the fourth position earlier in the event.

After repairing the frame on Saturday, Herndon was eager to get to a racetrack Saturday evening to determine if the broken weld was indeed the cause of his handling problems the previous night. The UpFront team made the pull across town to the Clayhill Motorsports complex and readied the Taylor Motorsports entry for competition in their weekly program. After the hot lap session, Herndon was encouraged by the repairs made earlier in the day and started his ritual of tailoring his mount to the track conditions. With an excellent showing of twenty four Modifieds, the Atwood Outlaw would continue on to win the first of three Heats qualifying the #1 Shaw by Taylor for the pole in the Feature event of the night. Again, Herndon would grab the point on the first lap to lead the caution riddled Main event from flag to flag over Arkansas Modified hot shoe Brad Buck.
